MOVIE REVIEW: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Beautiful
scenic shots, action-packed daydream sequences, an awesome playlist, and a
protagonist whom many could relate to are some of the numerous delights “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” could offer.
Directed, co-produced and starred by Ben Stiller, the movie is about the
shy, well-mannered Walter Mitty and his dive into the unknown as he searches
for the lost photo #25.

Of course, a feel good movie won’t be complete without
a leading lady who is in the form of Kristen Wiig. The funny Kristen Wiig plays
Cheryl Melhoff, Walter’s apple of the eye. It’s nice that the movie doesn’t
revolve around Walter’s crush towards Cheryl, which prevents it from being
called a chick flick or a romcom.

Aside
from the busy streets of New York, the movie displays vivid landscapes of
Iceland from its vast, winding valleys to its cold, snow-capped mountains. The
sights become more beautiful because of the well-picked soundtrack making the
viewer even more consumed to the movie.

Check out Ben Stiller's killer skateboard moves.

Hands-down
my favourite parts of the movie are: (1) the scene where projected Cheryl comes
out and sings Space Oddity by David Bowie, and (2) the ending where the
sought-after #25 is, at last, shown. The ending, like the whole movie, is
beautiful and well thought out. It will not leave you hanging. It has a good
closing that leaves you happy and contented of how it turned out – a 100%
feel-good movie for the whole family.

The
primary reason why I badly wanted to watch this movie is that I am a big
Kristen Wiig fan. It will be the first time to see her play as the leading
man’s love interest and someone who’s so normal – a break from her usual crazy,
cartoonish characters. But, as I intently watch through the movie, it’s hard
not to fall for or empathize with Walter. I believe he signifies that part in
us that longs for something big to happen in our lives. Every one of us is a
“Walter Mitty”. We only differ from one another based on how much W.M. there is
in us.

This
movie tells us that it’s okay to dream and have a brief escape from reality as
long as, in the end, we act on these dreams and turn them into reality. Wouldn’t
it be better to live our dreams rather than just dream about them? I know it’s
easier said than done but why not try? It’s unnerving to take that huge leap of
faith but hey, you only get to live once. And, which is scarier: coming out of
one’s comfort zone or reaching that point in your life when you regret not
doing the things you once dreamed to do?

Anyway,
before this movie review turns into someone’s life reflection, let me end this
by giving kudos to the cast and crew for creating this movie and presenting to
us “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”.
